Recognize Excellence

Many managers struggle to properly recognize their employees for their success. Some fail to do so at all, while others offer petty recognition that comes across as insincere. That is unfortunate since personal recognition and respect can be a much stronger motivating factor the cash for many individuals.

There are a few different ways to make sure that employees feel as though their work is appreciated. The most important thing to do is to make sure that the praise comes across as honest, rather than an idle pleasantry. Linking it to a specific achievement can help with this, especially if the employee is already proud of it.

Match Jobs to People

Every individual is unique, and many businesses cause both their workers and their output to suffer by trying to force people to use methods that do not work well for them. Good results often come from explaining the organization's goals to the employees and letting them choose how to accomplish those goals.

It is also important to strive for harmony between the job and the employee when hiring new workers. Managers should strive to focus on both the individual position that they are trying to fill and their organizational culture to find somebody who can fit in at the workplace. This type of personality matching will not make up for a lack of qualifications, so it is important to keep the employee's talents in mind as well. There are plenty of different ways to do this, including strategic IT staffing methods and plenty of others, so managers should experiment to find out which works best for them. Doing so will make sure the business ends up with an employee who can thrive in their business environment.

Provide Clear Instructions

Miscommunication is a leading cause of failure. After all, even the best employee will be unable to do their job if they do not know what that job involves. Many good employees will seek out clarification, but that causes delays while they wait for answers. It is much better to give clear instructions at the start of the project.

Managers who struggle with this can try some basic techniques to communicate more clearly. In general, the most important thing to do is to avoid assumptions or trusting in common sense. Every person will come from a unique background, so they will each default to different assumptions of their own. The only way to avoid that problem is to be precise and be sure to cover everything that they might need to know.

Provide Opportunities

The best employees are rarely content with stagnant careers. They want opportunities to grow, both as individuals and in terms of their careers. They won't give their all to employers who do not grant those opportunities. Managers who do provide those opportunities quickly find that their employees are more motivated and take more care in their work since they know that their excellence will be rewarded with a chance to advance.

It is important to remember that this growth does not have to come in the form of a promotion to a new position or higher wages. Those are certainly valuable things, but many employees also value chances to learn new skills or improve their workplace. Offering those opportunities will give them valuable motivation, but the skills that they learn can also be useful to the business in their own right.
